How to Care for Your Jeans: Washing, Drying & Storage Tips
Good denim lasts for years if you treat it right — and most of the damage people blame on "cheap jeans" is actually just over-washing and heat. A few small habits go a long way toward keeping your fit, wash and stitching intact.
Washing
Turn jeans inside out before washing to protect the outer colour and any printed or embroidered detail. Use cold water and a mild detergent, and skip the fabric softener — it breaks down the denim fibres over time. Dark washes especially benefit from cold water, since heat accelerates fading.
Drying
Air dry whenever possible. Tumble drying on high heat is the single biggest cause of shrinkage and fading in denim. If you need to machine dry, use a low heat setting and pull the jeans out while still slightly damp to finish air drying flat.
Storage
Fold jeans rather than hanging them by the waistband long-term, which can stretch the fabric at the hips. Keep them away from direct sunlight in storage, since UV exposure fades colour unevenly.
