Product pages throw a lot of jargon at you — here's what the most common denim terms actually mean, so you can shop with confidence.

Fit & Rise

Fit describes the overall silhouette — regular, straight, relaxed, loose or baggy. Rise refers to where the waistband sits: low rise sits below the natural waist, mid rise sits at it, and high rise sits above it.

Wash

"Wash" describes the finishing treatment applied to the denim after it's woven — dark wash keeps the deep indigo colour, light wash is faded for a worn-in look, and washed/distressed finishes add texture through sanding or whiskering.

Fabric

Most jeans are made from cotton denim, sometimes blended with a small amount of elastane for stretch. "Rigid" or "non-stretch" denim has no elastane and tends to hold its shape better over time, though it takes longer to break in.
